Frequently Asked Questions

Is it necessary to register for the conference?
Yes. Even if you want to attend only one or two lectures and not be involved with the entire symposium we still encourage you to register. Registration is easy. It takes only a few minutes. And for the purpose of ensuring that the symposium runs smoothly, everyone is encouraged to register.

I am an undergraduate from a far away school, is lodging available over Friday and/or Saturday night?
Housing with a student host in his or her room is avaiable for Friday and Saturday nights, but there are a limited number of spaces available and they will be filled in the order of registration. We will email you about your housing status very soon after you register.

I am interested in coming to your symposium. Will you be providing transportation to and from Brown by any chance?
Transportation is up to you. You might ask your department if it could help sponsor the trip.

What meals are you providing?
Registered participants will be invited to a banquet dinner on Saturday evening. The cost to attend the banquet is five dollars, which must be paid in advance of the symposium. Very light breakfast refreshments will be served prior to the first lecture on Saturday. All other meals are up to you.

I signed up for the banquet. How do I pay the $5 fee?
Payment will be collected at the door to the banquet. Payment in cash or check will be accepted. Checks should be made out to "Brown University." Note that if you are giving a talk at the symposium, your fee will be waived.

How much math do I need to know in order to understand the conference?
For the lectures we assume fluency with vector calculus and linear algebra. But the level of mathematical sophistication should never discourage you from attending a lecture since our lecturers are excellent communicators who are aware of the diverse set of backgrounds represented in their audiences.

I want to present a talk. How much time do I have to do so and who will be my audience?
Presentations are not to exceed 20 minutes unless you request additional time before the conference and we grant that request. Your primary audience will be composed of your fellow math and science interested undergraduates. You should realize that they come from a diverse set of mathematical and scientific backgrounds and give your presentation accordingly.

I'll be driving to Brown. Where can I park my car?
Parking on the day of the conference is available in the Barus & Holley lot. If you would like to park overnight, you will have to purchase a parking permit. Please notify Audrey Aguiar several days in advance if you will need parking during the conference and she will help make arrangements for your permit.

We caution that it is very easy to get ticketed around Brown so we recommend that you be on the safe side and arrange parking in this way

I'm a graduate student. Can I participate in the Symposium?
Yes, just register.
